Katrina Germein (text) and Suzanne Houghton (illustrator), Fabulous Frogs, CSRIO Publishing, October 2024, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781486317873
The CSIRO, as one would expect, have produced another wonderful introductory book, in picture book format, this time on frogs. The endpapers show which frogs are included. These drawings are clear, allowing for easy identification.
Once inside the book, the text becomes more informal, though full of facts, challenging the reader to choose their favourite fabulous frog. There is a different frog on each page from around the country, some being given double page spreads showcasing their habitats, while others are grouped together. Each one is named on each page. The reader learns how frogs grow and survive, with explanations as to why they are vulnerable.
At the end of the book further information is included. There are ideas for creating a frog-friendly garden, and the book concludes with a glossary.
Teachers’ notes aligned to the Australian curriculum are available from the CSIRO website.
Highly recommended for the 5-9 year old age group, and for the adults in their lives.
