Andrew Krakouer and Jacqueline Dinan (text) and Paul Seden (illustrator), My Dad’s Gone Away, Magabala Books, October 2024, 32 pp., RRP $27.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922777249
This beautifully crafted children’s book gently explores the often taboo topic of incarcerated parents. Written by acclaimed AFL footballer, Andrew Krakouer and former foster carer, Jacqueline Dinan, and illustrated by artist Paul Seden, My Dad’s Gone Away aims to offer comfort and understanding for children and families navigating challenging circumstances. But it accomplishes so much more.
Tarah’s dad has gone away but she doesn’t know where. At first, she imagines he’d be doing the things he loves, like fishing, or maybe trying his hand at rodeo riding. When she learns he is in prison, everything changes. During her first visit to her father, the prison security checks, and the loud door-banging are scary. Over time, Tarah draws comfort from a budding friendship with a young boy she meets there, who is also visiting his father, and from nature.
My Dad’s Gone Away provides a safe space for young readers age 6+ and their families to explore feelings of loss, confusion, and hope. Told from a child’s perspective, this powerful book highlights the value of connection, reminding children that their parents are still a part of their lives, even when physically absent. Paul Seden’s juxtaposition of chalk pastels on a monochrome background add depth, context and emotional connection.
A poignant, uplifting read that encourages open conversations about a difficult topic while celebrating the enduring bonds of family and community. An invaluable resource for children, families, educators, and those who work in community services and advocacy.
Highly recommended.
