Bush bugs

Helen Milroy, Bush bugs, Fremantle Press, January 2024, 32pp., RRP $19.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760993054

This bright colourful picture book with rhyming text is the latest in Helen Milroy’s series which includes Bush birds and Backyard bugs. It has the same hardback format with pages of different colours and bright illustrations with a First Nations’ theme.

Several familiar insects, a spider, and other creepy crawlies are included. While the little beasts are recognisable, the backgrounds are stylised. Many of the creatures are patterned as well. The overall effect is very attractive and appealing.

While obviously designed for quite young children, more information about the animals described, perhaps in a section at the back, would have been a good addition as the text does not really tell the reader much about each one.

Helen Milroy is a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist, a professor at the University of Western Australia and the AFL’s first Indigenous Commissioner.
