Helen Milroy, Bush Birds, Fremantle Press, April 2023, 32 pp., RRP $19.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760992422
Extending her Backyard series to the bush, Helen Milroy takes children through a range of common bush birds against brightly coloured Indigenous-inspired illustrations accompanied by a gentle rhyming text on each facing page. This book would be a delight to read aloud and look at with a pre-school child or early reader.
The rosella, king parrot, cassowary, brolga, emu, these and many more are here waiting to be identified. Helen Milroy is a long experienced and prize-winning author of children’s books, so the knows just how much and how little is needed for an impactful picture book to which children will want to return.
She is herself a descendant of the Palyku people or the Pilbara region of Western Australia.
Highly commended.
