Break (Click #6)

Kayla Miller, Break (Click #6), Walker Books Australia, March 2024, 224 pp., RRP $17.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781760655198

Break is the sixth graphic novel in Kayla Miller’s bestselling ‘Click’ series. Just like in previous titles such as Click and Camp, Break tackles highly relatable issues for the target age group, such as family dynamics, missing out, loneliness and forgiveness.

It’s Spring Break and Olive is being forced to spend time with her previously absent father instead of joining her friends on their epic adventures. As the week goes on, Olive’s easy-going nature gets shaken up by feelings of loneliness and resentment towards her dad. To make matters worse, Olive keeps up to date on all the fun her friends are having without her thanks to her brand-new mobile phone.

Readers 8+ will enjoy following Olive’s heart-warming and relatable emotional journey as she grapples with forgiveness and the fear of missing out. Plus, Miller’s illustrations capture all the little moments and diverse characters with warmth and authenticity in an aesthetic colour palette. It’s quite ‘American’ with mentions of Spring Break and cheerleading camp, but readers are unlikely to be put off by this.
