Australian Backyard Birds

Myke Mollard, Australian Backyard Birds, Woodslane Press, 2023, 64 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922800237

This book is absolutely bursting with information, both written and illustrated.

Mollard has loved nature all his life, and loves helping kids also fall in love with the natural world. He is a children’s educator, illustrator, author and designer. He began his career in graphic design, and this is apparent in the attractive layout of the book.

He has divided the book into Australian States and Territories, so readers can find information about birds near them. There is a lot of text, so younger readers will need some adult help, but the accompanying illustrations will appeal to all ages.

There is also information about the art of birdwatching, nocturnal birds, how to attract birds to your yard, and rare and endangered birds. The end pages illustrate migratory paths, birds of prey identification, bird beak design and much more. So much information!

This book would be an excellent resource for kids’ school projects, and a perfect addition to school libraries.

Mollard’s illustrations are bright and appealing, with so much detail, curious kids (and adults!) will pour over the pages for hours.

Explore his webpage, where you will find free downloadable worksheets to help you draw native animals.

Recommended for ages 10 to 100! It was recently and deservedly notabled in the 2024 Eve Pownall for Information Books category.
