Gabriel Evans, A Friend for George, May 2023, Puffin, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781761046506
George lives by the seaside and wishes for a friend. When he meets a cheery fish in a rockpool, George is happy to have someone to talk and tell jokes with. Just as in real life, there are a few friendship ups and downs as George learns how to be a good friend.
A Friend for George is a charming story about friendship and personal growth. It’s a great conversation starter for discussions on what it means to be a good friend, and the importance of considering the needs of others. Navigating friendships is an issue that young readers (4+) will be able to relate to their own lives and experiences. Throughout the story is a repeated refrain because that’s what friends do, which reinforces the key message of the book.
The illustrations are a standout. Gabriel Evans has combined stunning beach and ocean scenes with cute details like George’s blue beach shack and cosy patchwork quilt. Blue skies, sandy shores, breaking waves, and the rolling ocean are all brought to life in layered watercolour/gouache illustrations. There are plenty of little details to keep little ones engaged through repeated readings, especially in scenes showing the colourful marine life below the surface.
