Sofie Laguna (text) and Judy Watson (illustrator), When You’re Older, Allen & Unwin, March 2022, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760291341

When You’re Older explores the loyalty and connection between siblings. As the older brother envisions his future adventures with his new baby brother readers are taken on a magical and imaginative journey across seas and through the jungle, all while they protect each other and are by each other’s side every step of the way.

Sofie Laguna warmly captures ‘the importance of relationships with the people you go through life with’ while also highlighting the patience and importance of growing together and alongside one another, to become each other’s sidekick throughout life’s many adventures ahead – when you’re older.

Judy Watson’s colourful illustrations capture the movement and excitement of the boys’ adventures, creating a sense of wonder as we look deeper into the pictures and notice new and interesting elements each time the story is read. Each illustration has depth and layers, with reoccurring elements each time a page is turned; like their pet dog who appears to be along for the ride.

A simple but heart-warming story about hope for the future, yet appreciation for the now.
