Katie Stewart, When I can fly, Fremantle Press, August 2023, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760992682
An inspiring book about a little owl who is determine to grow strong and fly to see the city lights.
Katie Stewart delivers a beautifully written illustrated book with strong themes of growth. Through Boobook the young owl, young readers will be inspired to work hard to reach their goals. It’s also acts as a gentle reminder to parents to let their children spread their wings when the time comes. Stewart also emphasises that it is okay when your dream does not turn out the way you expect, and you can always go back under your parent’s wing to plan your next adventure.
Through easy-to-follow text and fun fonts, readers will become immersed with the storyline. The innocent dialogue between BooBook and his mother allows young readers to connect with the character and interact with the story. Not only was I delighted by the text, I loved the illustrations used throughout the book, the level of detail in the feathers brought the two owls to life.
I specifically loved the characterisation of BooBook as each page shows a more determined and cheekier owl ready to grab hold of his dreams. The portrayal of Australian flora and fauna is beautiful and emphasis of our noisy and bright city lights definitely adds effects to BooBook’s journey through the city.
I simply adore this book. I love the strong themes and morals that Stewart incorporates through each page. I definitely recommend this to young audiences.
