Two Rabbits

Larissa Ferenchuk (text) and Prue Pittock (illustrator), Two Rabbits, EK Books, January 2024, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922539656

Two Rabbits tells the story of Little Brown Rabbit and Little Grey Rabbit who have an argument. As they go their separate ways the story explores their emotions and the way they feel about their interaction with each other.

Feelings and emotions can often be difficult for young children to understand and express. Through this story children are able to explore the physical ways feelings can present and be felt or expressed. Like a fast heartbeat, tears, or stomping.

Exploring the perspective of each of the friends highlights the impact this situation has on each individual involved.

In the end, the friends come back together and apologise to each other which is a valuable topic for children to begin to understand – making mistakes and forgiveness.

I like the way this book uses the darkness of night and weather such as fog or mist, in the text and illustrations to represent the sadder, more somber feelings, and daylight, warmth, morning, and sunshine to represent new beginnings, forgiveness, and happier, lighter feelings.

An inviting story about friendship, feelings and forgiveness.
