Amy Adeney (text) and Erin McLean (illustrator), The Little Street Library, Affirm Press, June 2024, 32 pp,, RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922863416
The magic of street libraries to bring community together is explored in this heart-warming picture book. And the book is all the more special for being based on a true story. In the interests of occupying her children one school holidays, author Amy Adeney helped them build a street library for their front yard. What started as a crafty project, evolved into a true point of community connection. Just as in the story, Adeney went from scarcely knowing her neighbours to forging new friendships.
In the book, Rafi and her bestie Leo share a love of stories. So much so, that they turn the old birdhouse in Rafi’s yard into their own little library. But when Leo moves away Rafi is downhearted. Then she remembers their library and is inspired to create a street library for all.
Much in this seemingly simple story will be relatable for primary-aged children – the ache of missing a friend who moves away, the joy of sharing books, and the sense of community they can bring.
The pastel watercolour illustrations add to the sweet feel of the book, and I particularly enjoyed the spread where Rafi and Leo are carried away on a colourful sea of stories.
Highly recommended.
