The Balloon Blow Up

Andy Geppert, The Balloon Blow Up, Lothian Books, 32 pp., RRP $19.99 (hbk), July 2023, ISBN 9780734420718

The Balloon Blow Up is a whimsical picture book that beautifully captures the innocence and wonder of childhood decision-making. How big should Elly blow up the balloon? Even this seemingly simple question is exciting for the imaginative young protagonist. The book also explores the responsibility that accompanies caring for a cherished possession. When the balloon stands up for itself, it demands the young girl sign a balloon owner’s contract keeping it away from spikey things, cutty things and bitey things.

Andy Geppert’s exquisite illustrations add an extra layer of magic to this adorable story. The mostly monochrome palette is offset with fun pops of colour. Cute and expressive characters add personality, and there are lots of little details for children to spot. Matte paper and the distinctive artistic style give this book a lovely modern feel.
