Pig the Star (Pig the Pug #5)

Aaron Blabey,  Pig the Star (Pig the Pug #5),  Scholastic Australia, 1 September 2017,  32pp.,  $16.99 (pbk),  ISBN:  9781743812754

Once again Aaron Blabey makes us laugh with the latest installment of Pig the Pug’s adventures. He captures his audience with the use of cheeky humor and rhyming text while exploring the familiar elements and situations of childhood.

The much loved characters of Pig and Trevor return to participate in a photo shoot. The illustrations of Pug and Trevor dressed in their costumes definitely made us giggle – Pig as Madonna and Trevor as Elvis were our favourites!

Of course Pig demands to be the centre of attention, but when the photographer takes an interest in Trevor, the story takes a fateful turn.

I appreciate Blabey’s ability to convey meaningful messages in an inviting way for children and grown ups alike. While his stories are funny, they’re also an effective prompt for discussion and reflection of relationships, fairness, sharing and friendship.

Another enjoyable read about characters we’ve grown to love. This episode of Pig and Trevor’s friendship highlights the importance of sharing the spotlight and allowing each other to shine.
