Jan Andrews (text) and Timothy Ide (illustrator), Pidge’s Poppies, Ford St, April 2024, 32 pp., RRP $27.95 (hbk), ISBN 9781922696380
Join an incredible exhibit in this war themed picture book about the important role and prowess of pigeons during World Wars I and II. Through exploration of the museum and memorial, learn about Australia’s history, through the eyes of pigeon protagonists, Pidge and Henry. The narrative is set in a visit to the Australian War Memorial in Canberra which is undergoing a significant $498 million redevelopment project that began in 2018.
In this book, readers discover that pigeons carried secret messages between soldiers on the front lines and they were incredibly brave saving many lives by delivering vital information quickly and safely, flying much faster than the soldiers could on the ground. Pidge’s Poppies is an incredible text for honouring the bravery and heroism of pigeons.
The illustrations include an exceptional level of detail and realism found in the setting, the artefacts and the characters, including the tiny leg bands worn by the pigeons during wartime to transport messages. The line detail creates an immersive three-dimensional experience transitioning between single-page and double-page spreads, with intimate character moments and sweeping, panoramic views of the Australian War Memorial.
One of the book’s standout features are the reminders of war memories, which are cleverly portrayed in black and white or sepia to evoke a sense of the past and enhance the historical events that have shaped Australia and its way of life. The cover art and the choice of colour palette are a poignant reminder of the ANZAC Day dawn service. This thoughtful design sets the tone for the book, commemorating the sacrifices from both humans and animals.
Pidge’s Poppies is a remarkable addition to early childhood literature with children aged 4-10 in mind. There’s a blend of history, nature, and compassion to connect with and the story brings a powerful message that life and love can flourish even in the chaos of war and devastating moments. Pidge’s Poppies will inspire young learners with empathetic eyes, respect, honour and admiration for Australia’s heroes and War Memorials.
For remarkable compassionate hearted educators and parents, the theme of war is a very a sensitive and challenging topic to deliver, so it’s important to have creative literature like Pidge’s Poppies to foster an attitude that brings respect and gratitude for those have answered to the call of duty and unimaginable adversity. Providing the appropriate early foundation with this subject will encourage later reflection on the meaning, courage and true cost that war brings. The fact that I can find the story captivating despite my general dislike for war-related themes tells me the author has skillfully navigated a delicate topic by centering the narrative on the unique perspectives and experiences of the pigeons.
The teacher notes at the publisher website offers information on the symbolism of the red poppy around remembrance and deep respect, honoring the fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the service of their country. The purple poppy also must not be forgotten as it serves as a poignant tribute to the brave animals that have courageously stood alongside Australians in times of conflict, and a recent book on this topic helps to build this awareness. These notes also provide excellent activities to build empathy and understanding.
Lest We Forget.
