    Movie Time! (Hot Dog! #6)

Anh Do (text), Dan McGuiness (illustrator), Movie Time! (Hot Dog! #6). Scholastic Australia, June 2019, 128 pp., RRP $12.99 (pbk) ISBN 9781742997872

Hotdog, Lizzie and Kev – dog, lizard and cat – are best friends who share a desire to become movie-stars. So, when they see a poster asking for actors for the Volcano Monster, it seems like a dream come true. And while they know straight away which roles would suit them perfectly, they must pass the selection process at the all-important ‘try-out’. They set about practicing their skills to ensure they will be chosen for the roles of Hero Ninja, Volcano Monster and Brave Ballerina. Each encourages the other toward success but will they be good enough to be chosen for the starring roles?

Anh Do is much-loved for his creativity across a wide variety of artforms. His presentation is always highly professional, the content thoughtful and his talent exceptional. In Movie Time!, the sixth in the Hot Dog! series, readers are treated to yet another cleverly written positive, funny and joyful story. Amidst the craziness of the dialogue and zany illustrations, presented in the restricted palette of black, white and red, emerges a tale of friendship, kindness, co-operation and wisdom – big picture aspirations cleverly disguised as light-hearted madness.

Anh Do has gifted us with yet another children’s book that is sure to be embraced by all ages – a lovely book to share for read-out-loud fun and, for those who can read independently, some precious moments of literary delight. So, as we enjoy Book #6, we are sure to be waiting for news of more adventures for our friends, Hotdog, Lizzie and Kev in Hot Dog!#7.

Independent readers of Hot Dog 6; which moments did you find your literary delight?

And volcanoes have definitely played roles in literature and genre fiction for children before.
