Leaf Letters is a small book, but a thoughtful and evocative one, with pathways to uncover codes and secrets. Nine-year-old Hazel Bird loves photographing tiny plants, mosses, tree roots, spider webs and other small things of nature in her neighbourhood bush. She struggles to make and keep friends. Olivia was her friend, until a misunderstanding occurs that was largely Hazel’s own fault.
As Hazel photographs the bush, she meets Cole a boy with a hundred pockets and a strange way of talking through symbols. Together they find hidden treasure and a handwritten book of secrets. The challenge is to solve the puzzles and discover the mysterious child who buried the treasure many years ago.
Olivia reveals the resolution of the misunderstanding with Hazel. Their friendship is restored. She is also part of the puzzle uncovering the mysterious child. There are many puzzles, symbols and signs to unlock.
Written and illustrated by Lorena Carrington, this interactive story for young readers told in words and pictures, has coded messages to decipher the mysteries. ‘Warning. Answers ahead.’ These words are at the back of the book, so there are answers if you can’t find them. I couldn’t find them all.
A quirky book which may surprise young readers.
Suitable for ages 7 to 11
Highly recommended.
