Heartstopper Volume 5

Alice Oseman, Heartstopper Volume 5, Hodder Children’s Books, December 2023, 336 pp., RRP $24.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781444957655

Alice Oseman, the admirable creator of the million-copy bestselling Heartstopper books (2019) and Netflix series (2022), brings us Volume 5 (2023) continuing the beloved narrative of Nick and Charlie navigating their gay teenage romance and circle of close friendships at a British grammar school.

This graphic novel is a positive mental health resource that makes a great addition to YA literature space, the LGBTQIA+ community and any inclusive teen library. It visually brings to life every comical illustration of voice, mood, expression, identity, awareness, trust and friendship that gay couple Nick and Charlie reveal in their genuine affection for each another.

Heartstopper Volume 5 is a lovely narrative that I recommend for teenage readers. The book does contain some language and themes around sex, however in a very safe and responsible manner. The main characters are teenagers, so the content is appropriate for the 13-17 age range from a literary standpoint. However, it’s important to note that the legal age of consent to sex is 16 in many places. While the book handles the subject maturely, exercise discretion when younger adolescents are reading it.

During the narrative, Nick and Charlie start to become more aware of their growing feelings for one another. Their touches, lingering glances, butterflies in their stomachs – all show signs that their relationship is evolving into something more. As they try to navigate these new, complicated emotions, Nick and Charlie give in to their lust, revealing their deep, underlying affection and vulnerability for one another. This narrative is a story of self-discovery, emotional honesty, and the power of giving in to one’s authentic feelings.

One of the main strengths of this volume lies in its ability to address sensitive topics including language around safe sex, nudity and gay romance with care. Oseman’s depiction of mental health struggles and the LGBTQIA+ experience is both authentic and sensitive, which resonate with readers in the transformative journey of growing up.

Teacher notes are yet to arrive for this volume, however the teacher notes previously from the first four volumes found at the publisher’s website present some valuable discussions and questions for young adults.

Overall, Heartstopper Volume 5 is a must-read for fans of the series and an impressive introduction for those new to the world of Heartstopper! While it was published almost a year ago now, the recent release of the 3rd series on Netflix ensures these graphic novels remain relevant and read.
