Getting Dusty (Uncle XBox #2)

Jared Thomas, Getting Dusty (Uncle XBox #2), Magabala Books, February 2025, 108 pp, RRP $17.95 (pbk), ISBN 9781922777546

This is the second novel in the Uncle Xbox series from multiple prize-winning author, Jared Thomas. The action of the novel takes place around Adelaide and Port Augusta, and follows the life of young Dusty, twelve years old, Indigenous, talented at soccer, and bullied at school.

Dusty can give as much cheek as he gets, and isn’t too intimidated to have second thoughts about using his fists on the bully when he gets his chance. This leads to Dusty’s troubles with the authorities at school, where assumptions are made about his character — and further troubles with is mum at home, who grounds him after his school suspension.

Will Uncle XBox’s suggestion that he spend some time on country with his Aboriginal family be the lesson he needs if he is going to learn to be strong by walking away from bullies? There will be adventures, time for fishing, an introduction to hands-on Indigenous crafts, and a lot of talking to do. The big test will be when Dusty returns to school and has to face the boy whose nose he had bloodied. Readers will be hoping Dusty can find new ways to behave.

Recommended for readers from 10 to 13 years, and beyond.
