Democracy!

Philip Bunting, Democracy!, Hardie Grant Children’s Publishing, April 2023, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 978176121147

Democracy! is a beautifully presented and skilfully written book that illustrates what defines democracy and the importance of ‘having a say.’ People power is the way in which individuals over the centuries have ensured and protected freedom and equality for its citizens which will only continue through social engagement.

It is a big subject and Bunting does a remarkable job making it interesting and enjoyable. This comprehensive presentation of democracy covers a broad range of aspects—from the basic definition of democracy through to consideration of alternative forms of governance and how individuals can ensure that government effectively represents its citizens.

The initial appearance of Bunting’s Democracy! can be misleading with its picture book format. While the illustrations are engaging and beautifully rendered, this positive primer on people power is so much more than a visual aid to understanding democracy. Every page is full of well-considered information. The easy-to-read and engaging format of this book makes a complex subject very accessible for children ten years of age and older as well as a great resource for adults to explain democracy in an approachable manner.

Bunting encourages active engagement in democratic governance by including a how-to-guide for individuals to ‘find their voice.’ This is an excellent starting point for young people to become involved in their future. While the ideals of democracy embrace equality and freedom as integral to an inclusive society, Bunting points out that this is indeed a delicate balance. It is only through ‘people power’ that innovative ideas and the developing needs of society will ensure that democratic government remains effective and relevant in this changing world.

Democracy! is an important book with a vital message. It was Notabled in the 2024 CBCA Eve Pownall Award for Information Books.
