Ashling Kwok (text), and Arielle Li (illustrator), Butterfly girl, Exisle Publisher, October 2023, 32 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922539564
Butterfly Girl is a colourful story of nature, connection and friendship. When Olivia moves from the wide open spaces of the country to a city apartment her world turns dull and grey – especially with the absence of her butterfly friends.
Olivia soon realises that she needs to transform her apartment balcony into a colourful and inviting space to attract company. In time, Olivia’s world is abundant with friendship and connection – both human and butterfly – as they share in nature and the joy it can bring.
This is a bright and colourful story which explores themes of nature, loneliness, problem solving, sharing, connection and friendship. Ashling Kwok and Arielle Li’s words and illustrations mesh beautifully, creating an inviting journey through the pages.
My favourite part of this story is the inclusion of the ‘How to grow a Butterfly Garden’ at the back. Inspired by the story children are then encouraged to further engage with nature.
