The Wobbly Bike

Darren McCallum (text) and Craig Smith (illustrator), The Wobbly Bike, Walker Books Australia, July 2024, 32 pp., RRP $25.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760656416

The Wobbly Bike is a light-hearted, energetic, and joyful story which highlights the value of community and relationships, including the valuable role of grandparents in children’s lives.

Using rhyme and gentle humour, Darren McCallum tells an engaging tale about a very wobbly bike.

After Pop’s encouragement and support, along with patience and practice, his grandchild masters the wobbly bike.

Craig Smith’s illustrations delightfully capture the adventure and movement of the story and brings its lovable characters to life. The illustrated front and back cover pages beautifully represent the ‘Top End’ of Australia and provide many different elements to find and point out together.

This story warmed my heart with nostalgia as I reminisced about my own grandparents who were very similar – always encouraging and cheering me on, and up for fun adventures together.
