Empowering Resources provide a collection of ‘resources that transform understanding and initiate conversations.’  Their books ‘nurture, educate and empower children all over the world’ as they simply yet effectively explore things like anxiety, death, depression, and body safety, along with self-doubt, self-love and acceptance, relationships and life events.

Chelsea Davies (text) and Lisa Coutts (illustrator), Come Home Ella, Empowering Resources, September 2020, 36pp., RRP $17.00 (pbk), ISBN 9781925592351

When baby sister, Ella, arrives into the world prematurely there are new feelings and experiences to navigate.

Ella’s big sister (never named as anything else) sadly understands that hospital is the best place for her new baby sister so that she can gain strength and finally come home. But the scary tubes and germs take some getting used to.

Big sister expresses anger and frustration with this new experience as it feels like her parents aren’t around like usual, especially her mum who she misses terribly – particularly her hugs!

Big sister creates Hug Charts for her mum so that she never misses cuddles from her or Ella as they count down the days until Ella can come and finally meet her new big sister.

Fiona Merrin (text) and Simon Howe (illustrator), My Mum’s a Pillow, Empowering Resources, September 2020, 36pp., RRP $17.00 (pbk), ISBN 9781925592337

This book ‘encourages everyone to feel that they are beautiful just the way they are.’

The reader is taken on a journey of self-doubt, body image and self-acceptance which the characters experience.

This story encourages an understanding of perspective, and the consideration of the negative thoughts which may be present in the minds of others, which impact their behaviour and interactions.

Finishing with a message of understanding and loving the skin you’re in, this book highlights the importance of communication, and actions and their impact on others.

Renee Irving Lee (text) and Lisa Coutts (illustrator), Rosie Leads the Way, Empowering Resources, September 2020, 36pp., RRP $17.00 (pbk), ISBN 9781925592252

In this story Rosie’s personal insecurities are shared through her interactions with Penelope; the girl everyone thought was perfect.

Rosie’s mum always says that she has a smart mind, strong body, and beautiful heart. It is this mantra that helps Rosie to believe in herself and support Penelope when their paths cross.

This book highlights that everyone has their own insecurities and strengths which should be harnessed to support others while believing in yourself.
