Zanni Louise (text) and Anna Pignataro (illustrator), The Pet Mouse (Florence and Fox #3), Walker Books Australia, July 2024, 32 pp., RRP $25.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781760655525
The Pet Mouse is the third adventure for Florence and Fox. This adorable duo is back to explore another tricky and relatable part of friendship – jealousy. When Florence finds out that Fox has a pet mouse, she doesn’t want to see him, claiming she’s too busy tidying her room. Instead, she crosses her fingers and wishes for a pet mouse of her own. When all her crossing and wishing starts getting in the way of having fun, she has a change of heart.
This sweet book is a good reminder for young readers that while they may not get everything they wish for; they have other things (or skills) of value. The story also touches on themes of perseverance and communication, in a perfectly age-appropriate way.
Anna Pignataro’s illustrations are soft crayon and watercolour collages in a soothing colour palette, perfect for quiet times and bedtimes. The anthropomorphised animals give the book a charming retro feel. The Pet Mouse is a lovely choice for children aged 3-5 years.
