Sunya Mara, The Darkening (The Darkening Duology #1), Hodder & Stoughton, July 2022, 400 pp., RRP $22.99 (pbk), ISBN 9781529354874
Sunya Mara’s debut novel, The Darkening, is a dark and fascinating addition to the world of YA fantasy.
The intense action is established instantly. In just the first chapter we are introduced to protagonist Vesper, fearlessly facing the Storm – a deadly darkness that curses everyone it touches. But Vesper’s bravery is costly, as her wanted ex-revolutionist father Alcanar is forced to step in to save her. When Prince Dalca and his trusted Wardana are alerted to Alcanar’s whereabouts, they imprison him and sentence him to death by The Trials.
Fueled by anger and desperation, Vesper abandons everything she knows and sets out to rescue her father. With the help of an undercover revolutionist Wardana, Vesper hides in plain sight as an ikonomancy apprentice, learning the art of magical ikons. With the threat of the Storm looming, her father’s Trials nearing and the distracting presence of Prince Dalca, Vesper must make a move soon, but more importantly, the right one.
Vesper’s fantastic narration and the fast-paced nature of the novel made for a compelling read. I found that the concept of the Storm and its alluring magic was captivating, although I would have enjoyed further world building for a more complete understanding. The enemies to lovers to enemies trope is sure to appeal to a YA audience and the gripping ending leaves questions to be answered in the next instalment.
YA fantasy lovers are sure to devour this promising, magical series.
