One little duck

Katrina Germein (text) and Danny Snell (illustrator), One little duck, HarperCollins Australia, July 2023, 32 pp., RRP $22.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781460761649

A fun twist to one of our favourite nursey rhymes – One Little Duck! Instead of counting to five little ducks, Germein and Snell have introduced a variety of barn animals for mama duck to call home each night. This adorable picture book is filled with fun as you go up over the hills and into the fields where flowers sway.

Katrina Germein has written yet another cheeky book that I absolutely adore. Germein writes in clear simple language creating an easy to follow rhythm and rhyme that readers can sing along to. I loved that mama duck expands her dining table and invites various animals home for dinner each night. From quack quack to baa baa and grunt grunt, readers will learn about different barn animals and their classic farmyard sounds!

Danny Snell brings the barnyard to life through beautiful drawings and vibrant colours. He creates surprise and delight through his detailed illustrations as he portrays each character with a different personality. I loved that Snell gives a sneak peak of the next character allowing young readers to engage in the story and eagerly turn the next page!

The award-winning author and illustrators have done a remarkable job in reimagining one of our favourite nursery rhymes. This is a much-loved picture book, one which all families should add to their collection.
