One Hundred Words: a first handwriting book

Anna Kovecses, One Hundred Words: a first handwriting book,  A Wide-Eyed Edition/Murdoch Books,  April 2016,  56pp., $18.99 (hbk), ISBN: 978184780801

This delightfully illustrated workbook, produced on hardy cream paper, invites children to begin to make the marks that will make the letters of the alphabet, then takes them through exercises in writing those letters. The  book is so beautiful children will want to write in it, and it is so beautiful adults will be reluctant to see the pages blurred and smudged and scribbled on by the wavering lines of children still learning to operate a pencil. Nevertheless, it will be money well spent to have this book covered with a child’s first attempts at writing. Perhaps even a souvenir of that year of crucial learning. Recommended for 4-6 year olds.
