Jennifer Loakes (text),  Belinda Elliott (illus), Mate and Me,  Windy Hollow Books, 1 August 2015,  32pp.,  $25.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922081506

A sensitive story about a young boy who loves observing a family of birds that are building a nest and decorating it with silver objects.   He also has another new neighbour, a shy young boy his own age who is something of a mystery.  Both aspects of the story are finally brought together and show the value of such qualities as patience, hope and overcoming loss.  The pastel toned illustrations are appealing – especially the beautifully drawn birds – and complement the gentle storyline.  Ages 3-5.
