Allison Paterson (text), Shane McGrath (illus), Granny’s Place, Big Sky Publishing, 1 April 2016, 32pp., $14.99 (pbk), ISBN: 9781925275636
The description of Granny’s house in Granny’s Place is familiar to many children – high springy beds, discovering forgotten treasures in dusty cupboard drawers, a big pantry full of buttery biscuits and plenty of cousins crowded around the dinner table. Allison describes this world beautifully with a gentle and unexpected twist when Pa goes to hospital and doesn’t return. Granny moves on to a new house and her grandchildren adapt to the new surroundings, with the consistency of Granny’s love the focal point. I enjoyed the landscape and animal illustrations but found the human faces to be somewhat inconsistent and a little too cartoonish for my taste.
