Andrew Daddo (text) and Christopher Nielsen (illustrator), Grandpa’s Guide to Happiness, ABC Books AU, July 2025, 32 pp. RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9780733343629
Grandpa’s Guide to Happiness is a picture book that celebrates the joy and positivity of a grandparent’s relationship with their grandchild.
Told through the eyes of a child narrator, the story shares Grandpa’s philosophy for happiness, highlighting the fun activities they enjoy together. From his energetic passion for making and fixing, gardening and fishing, to playful jokes, games, and, of course, hugs—Grandpa’s enthusiasm to connect with his grandchild is heartwarming.
Daddo’s text has all the lively, cheerful and lighthearted energy of his many previous best selling picture books. With phrasing and words that reflect a child’s voice, the first-person narrator feels genuine and relatable for kids.
The brightly coloured, bold accompanying illustrations, by award winning Illustrator, Nielsen, exude an energetic enthusiasm which adds to the text’s sense of joy. The illustrations expertly capture the warmth and playfulness between the child and grandparent as well as the liveliness in their movements and activities.
As a grandparent myself, I found Daddo and Nielsen’s portrayal of this special relationship both relevant and endearing. It’s a privilege as a grandparent to have the time and space to enjoy the little ones’ joy for life and wonder at their development and accomplishments.
Grandpa’s Guide to Happiness is a lovely book for 3–6-year-olds who relate to the positive grandparent relationship. It is an excellent option for a Father’s Day present for grandfathers who are themselves gardeners, fixers and makers.
