Sophie Splatt, Dream, Create, Inspire: easy projects for an amazing bedroom makeover, The Five Mile Press, June 2015, 48pp., $16.95 (pbk), ISBN: 9781760066468
Encouraging kids to follow a creative pursuit a way from the computer and television can sometimes seem like hard work. It requires time, planning and often an adult to direct the show so chaos doesn’t ensue. This is where easy project based books like Dream, Create, Inspire can come in handy.
Using largely bits and pieces from around the home; fabric, paints, yarns and bottles, Sophie Splatt has designed a book where kids can take some responsibility for making and creating. Splatt provides 15 easy creative projects like ‘tissue-paper tassel garlands’, ‘fabric strip curtains’, ‘papier-mache bowls’ or ‘painted flower bottles’ for decorating your room. At the back of the book are stencils and decorative press-out pieces to help with the creative process. Easy to follow instructions with ‘hints’ or suggestions of other things to try, accompany each activity with a nicely produced colour photograph of the end result.
Something for rainy days or those ‘I’ve got nothing to do’ moments. Recommended for kids seven and above.
