Sue DeGennaro, Bear & Duck are Friends, Little Hare, March 2023, 24 pp., RRP $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781761210327
Shortlisted in the 2024 CBCA Early Childhood Book of the Year Awards, Bear & Duck are Friends by author/illustrator Sue deGennaro is the perfect story for little people who are nervous about giving new experiences a go for the first time. While Duck is enthusiastic about new things, Bear is more cautious, preferring to avoid activities that sometimes do not go as planned. However, Duck is a very good best friend, inviting Bear to his dance class, where Bear slowly realises that relaxing and going with the flow can feel magnificent!
While some little ones are eager to give anything a whirl, we all know those who would rather stick with what is known. This delightful picture book with its simple story and lyrical text is perfect for introducing the idea that with the help of a friend and a little trust, new adventures can be unexpectedly enjoyable. More outgoing individuals can also learn about how to encourage their friends to join in activities without overwhelming them. The flipped stereotypes (the much bigger Bear is quiet and timid while his smaller friend Duck takes more risks) could also stimulate important conversations about not judging others by their appearance. A sweet story with a message, Bear and Duck are Friends is suitable for early childhood reading circles and one-to-one sharing times.
