Winston’s Special Day

Gabriel Evans, Winston’s Special Day, Berbay, May 2025, 40 pp., RRP $26.99 (hbk), ISBN 9781922610980

Winston’s Special Day is a book with big feelings; particularly focusing on expectations. Winston has dressed up in his favourite outfit and is ready to enjoy his special day! But when he meets his friends around town, they seem to have forgotten his birthday. Things are further complicated when Winston’s friend Miles requires him to participate on a top-secret mission. Winston demonstrates such patience as he is dragged around town, doing anything but celebrating Winston’s birthday.

Fortunately, the mission is just a ruse and Winston’s friends haven’t forgotten his special day after all. They have managed to evade Winston all day as they are preparing for his birthday. When re-reading Winston’s Special Day, eagle-eyed kiddos will be able identify the animals that Miles is trying to avoid whilst on his special mission.

The illustrations are beautiful and will appeal to the animal lovers. Evans has crafted a delightful little town featuring anthropomorphised animals going about their day. The animals are wearing the most adorable outfits. My personal favourites are the seal (in a blue cosy jumper and headphones sliding casually down the footpath) and a group of dapper penguins (in pinstripe jackets lining up to cross a busy road). The attention to detail is wonderful and helps make this sweet little story even more engaging.

Winston’s Special Day is a book that young readers will want to revisit again and again. It is recommended for ages two and up.
