Lindsey Duga, Royal Heirs Academy, Hachette Australia, January 2025, 384 pp., RRP $22.95 (pbk), ISBN 0316578665

After years of keeping his four grandchildren hidden from the world, King Leander Eldana must now choose the next heir to the Ashland throne.
There’s Titus Eldana, the grandson groomed for leadership since birth. Alaric Eldana, shaped by the struggles of his past and determined to prove himself. And Emmeline Eldana, desperate to earn the approval of her distant parents.
And then there’s Sadie—who, somehow, has found herself caught in the middle of it all.
Only one can claim the throne of Ashland… but who will prove themselves worthy in the eyes of the King?
Royal Heirs Academy is the perfect novel for teen readers, featuring elements of romance, and friendship. Lindsey Duga also addresses topics such as bullying and physical health, which may be suited to a more mature audience. Each character has been construed so precisely, warranting sympathy from readers despite their antagonistic natures.
Take Emmeline for example, whose efforts to please her negligent parents justify her desperation. Alaric, a kid generally misunderstood by the world attempts to find his place at Almus Terra academy, with his rough past perhaps explaining his icy exterior. I found myself even sympathising for Titus, a character who despite his selfish motives feared judgement due to his health issues. Each character experiences their own personal qualms, perhaps suggesting that we should treat everybody with respect and kindness despite their actions.
An even greater comment is made on society throughout the novel, evident through King Leander’s development into a sinister King, who approves of dishonesty and injustice by means of achieving the crown. Duga leaves us with a final thought through this construction of the King’s character- is this how our governments and monarchies really operate?
Overall, a real page turner, guaranteed to keep readers on their toes….
