Claire Saxby (text), Connah Brecon (illus.), Wild Pa, Random House Australia, 1 August 2016, 32pp., $24.99 (hbk), ISBN 9780857988003
Saxby’s acclaimed rhythmic storytelling makes this a great read aloud text about the relationship between a child and his Pa. I don’t mind the ambiguity of terminologies, Pa meaning father in some languages and grandfather in others. For me this successfully opens the book to a wider audience, with potential for discussions about older parenting. Told in the first person, hyphenated titles for Pa’s wonderful attributes (my favourite being “My Pa is a … grow-peas-in-crazy-shapes Pa”), take us through a day spent together in slightly naughty fun. For all his ‘wildness’ Pa remains responsible and teaches the reader how to maintain a balance in creative play.
Brecon’s lovely illustrations combine the clarity of digital graphics with familiar handmade crayon outlines and great use of tone and space. A lovely touch having the two male characters wear matching clothes and certainly a book for boys young and old. Suitable for over 5’s.
