Jess Black (text), Gabriel Evans (illus.), Welcome Home, Harley (Little Paws #1), Random House Australia, April 2017, 84 pp., $9.99 (pbk), ISBN: 9780143781776

Welcome Home, Harley is a charming chapter book for young readers. Part of a series developed for Guide Dogs Australia, this first book introduces the Puppy Raising program where families care for a pup in preparation for their training as a guide dog.

Lexie is mad keen to have a dog. When her family get involved in the program, she takes on the day to day responsibility for Harley, although the story shows that the whole family needs to be involved in caring for such a special dog, learning together as they go. The book details the program whilst telling a simple but interesting story, with heaps of appeal for early readers and potential for sharing as a read aloud.
